Vent-free logs must either be put in a working wood burning fireplace or a UL listed vent free box. Vented logs can only be placed in a working wood burning fireplace with the damper fixed in the open position to the size of the fireplace and flue. These appliances are meant to be on when you are home and off when you are not as it is an open flame.
